If you’re like most people, you probably have a Verizon FIOS router in your home. And if you’re like most people, you probably want to set up a DMZ on that router. Here’s how to do it. First, open your Verizon FIOS router’s administrative page (usually by entering the IP address of your router in your browser’s address bar). Then click the “DMZ” tab. On the DMZ tab, you’ll see two sections: Inbound and Outbound. In the Inbound section, you’ll see a list of all the devices that are connected to your router (including both computers and phones). You can add or remove devices from this list by clicking on the “Add” button next to their names and then entering their IP addresses. The IP addresses for phones and computers will usually be different, but you can usually find the IP address for a TV or other device by looking it up online. In the Outbound section, you’ll see a list of all the websites that are allowed to access your computer through your Verizon FIOS router (again, including both computers and phones). You can add or remove websites from this list by clicking on the “Add” button next to their names and then entering their URLs. The URLs for websites will usually be different, but you can usually find them by looking them up online. Finally, in both sections, you’ll need to enter some basic security information: Inbound Security Type (usually “Windows”), Outbound Security Type (usually “TLS”), Protocol (usually “TCP”), Port Range (usually 80), and User Name and Password. If you want to make sure that a particular device is always available through your firewall, you can assign it to be a DMZ host in your Wi-Fi router. Here’s how to do it on Verizon FIOS.
Note: You shouldn’t do this normally unless you know what you’re doing, because it’s bypassing the firewall. But if you are setting up an internal Wi-Fi network, you can set the new router to be the DMZ host.
To login to your Wi-Fi router and tweak this setting, open up a browser and go to 192.168.1.1 and then login with the password located on the sticker on the router itself. (The username is always admin).
Once there, head to Firewall Settings on the main menu and click through the warning.
Click on DMZ host in the left-hand menu.
And then make sure to Check the box for “DMZ Host IP Address” and set the actual IP address to the IP of whatever device you are trying to bypass the firewall with.
And again, don’t use this to try and get around a firewall rule. That’s not what this is for.
